A marriage celebrant does much more than simply turn up on the day and ask you to say “I do”.
From the legal paperwork before your wedding to shaping the ceremony itself, your celebrant is responsible for making sure your marriage is both legally valid and — just as importantly — feels like you.
Here’s what that actually involves.
Before the wedding
One of the first things your celebrant will do is help you complete the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
In most circumstances, this needs to be given to your celebrant at least one month before the wedding. Your celebrant will also need to confirm your identity and eligibility to marry and make sure the required documentation is in order.
But that’s really only the administrative beginning.
For a personalised ceremony, this is also when your celebrant gets to know you as a couple: how you met, what matters to you, the kind of atmosphere you want and — equally importantly — anything you definitely don’t want.
Some couples want plenty of humour and storytelling. Others prefer something elegant, warm and relatively understated. There is no reason every wedding ceremony should sound the same.
Writing your ceremony
Your celebrant will then bring everything together into a ceremony that works for you.
There are certain words that Australian marriage law requires to be said during the ceremony, but around those legal requirements there is considerable freedom.
A ceremony might include your story, personal vows, readings, music, a ring exchange or contributions from family and friends. Or it can be beautifully simple.
A good ceremony should feel considered without feeling overproduced.
My approach at Celebrant, Actually is to create something warm, polished and personal — while making sure it still sounds natural when it is spoken aloud.
On the wedding day
Your celebrant will generally arrive well before the ceremony begins.
There are details to check, people to coordinate and often a slightly nervous person waiting at the end of the aisle who could use some reassurance.
During the ceremony, the celebrant guides everyone through what happens next without becoming the centre of attention.
That distinction matters.
The ceremony is about the two people getting married. My role is to give it structure, warmth and confidence — and then know when to get out of the way.
Making the marriage legal
This is the part that isn't optional.
An authorised marriage celebrant must say the legally required words, hear each person make the required marriage vow and ensure the marriage documents are correctly completed and witnessed.
After the ceremony, your celebrant submits the required paperwork to the relevant registry of births, deaths and marriages.
In NSW, that means registering the marriage with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages.
So while the ceremony may feel relaxed, there is quite a bit happening behind the scenes to make sure everything is legally correct.
And what about a legals-only ceremony?
Not everyone wants a full wedding ceremony.
A legals-only marriage strips things back to what is legally required. It can be an excellent option for couples who want to marry simply, are planning a larger celebration elsewhere, or just don't want the traditional wedding format.
At Celebrant, Actually, a personalised wedding ceremony is $1,075, while a simple legals-only marriage is $575.
You can read more about both options on my Ceremonies page.
Choosing the right celebrant
There are plenty of excellent celebrants in Sydney, and we're certainly not all the same.
Look for someone whose personality and style suit the kind of wedding you're planning. Read their website rather than relying only on price, look at how they write and, ideally, have a conversation with them before deciding.
You should feel that you can trust your celebrant with the serious legal parts while also being comfortable having them standing beside you during a fairly significant moment in your life.
That combination is ultimately what you're paying for.
